Cape Verde Leaders Hail Lula’s Historic Brazil Victory

Cape Verdean leaders have extended their warm congratulations to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva following his historic victory in Brazil’s presidential runoff, signaling a new chapter for diplomatic and economic ties between the two Lusophone nations.

A Shared Vision for Growth

Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho, speaking from the final leg of a three-day official visit to the Netherlands, expressed “great satisfaction” with the election results. He emphasized that the government of Cape Verde views Lula’s reelection as a pivotal opportunity to revitalize the partnership between the two Atlantic neighbors.

“Cape Verde and Brazil share long-standing historical ties of friendship,” Carvalho told reporters. “We intend to take advantage of this moment to deepen our relations and develop new areas of cooperation.”

A ‘Moment of Rediscovery’ for Democracy

President José Maria Neves also offered high praise for the victory, framing the election as a landmark event for the Portuguese-speaking world. In a video message, Neves drew a poetic parallel to the common history of the two nations, noting that explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral passed through Cape Verde on his way to South America centuries ago.

Neves described Sunday’s vote as a “moment of rediscovery” and a “redefinition of Brazil through democracy, freedoms, inclusive growth, and social justice.” He characterized the outcome as a “vibrant victory for Brazil, for democracy, and for the progressive world.”

A Historic Mandate

Lula da Silva secured his win in the second round of voting, garnering approximately 51.7% of the vote against challenger Flávio Bolsonaro. This victory marks a return to power for Lula, who previously served two terms as president between 2003 and 2011.

When he assumes office on January 5, Lula will make history as the first person in Brazil to be elected to the presidency on four different occasions, a testament to his enduring influence on the nation’s political landscape. For Cape Verde, the return of a familiar partner in Brasilia offers hope for strengthened maritime, cultural, and economic exchange.
