President Demands Justice After Portugal Exam Failures
LISBON — Portuguese President António José Seguro has issued a firm demand for fairness and transparency in the nation’s higher education admissions process following a series of technical failures and delays during national secondary school exams.
In a written statement released Tuesday following his weekly meeting with Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, the President emphasized that the state must safeguard the “principle of equality” for all students. The message comes amid growing public anxiety over grading errors and administrative hurdles that have disrupted this year’s academic calendar.
A Duty to Protect Student Merit
President Seguro addressed the “understandable concern and anxiety” felt by thousands of students, families, and teachers. He asserted that at such a pivotal moment in a young person’s life, the state has a fundamental obligation to provide a system rooted in rigor, predictability, and trust.
“When failures or delays arise, it is essential that they be recognized, explained, and resolved with the utmost speed and consideration,” the President stated. “No student can be disadvantaged by technical or administrative difficulties outside of their own effort and merit.”
Preventing Future Failures
The President’s critique focused heavily on the need for accountability and modernization. While acknowledging the push for technological innovation within the school system, he argued that these updates must be accompanied by robust prevention mechanisms to avoid the “constraints” seen in recent weeks.
With the second phase of national exams approaching, the Head of State urged the government to draw immediate lessons from these failures to ensure the upcoming round of testing proceeds without incident. He called for a system that offers “normality and predictability,” particularly regarding the highly competitive race for university placements.
A Message of Solidarity
Despite his criticisms of the administrative process, Seguro reaffirmed his confidence in the quality of Portugal’s public schools. He offered a “word of confidence and solidarity” to the students awaiting their final results and praised the dedication of teachers who have worked to stabilize the situation.
“For many young people and parents who for years made sacrifices to achieve a better future, this is a decisive moment,” the President concluded. “It must be concluded with justice, rigor, and respect for everyone.”
The President’s statement was issued shortly before his departure for a state visit to Cape Verde, marking his first official international trip since taking office.
