Portugal vs Spain: 2026 World Cup Match Preview & History

Two Iberian giants are set to collide on the grandest stage in world football as Portugal faces Spain this Monday in Arlington, Texas. At stake is a place in the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals, but for Portugal, the match carries the weight of history: they have never defeated their rivals in a major tournament knockout match.

Historical Rivals Meet Again

The clash at the 94,000-capacity AT&T Stadium serves as a direct rematch of the 2025 Nations League final. While Portugal edged Spain in a thrilling penalty shootout (5-3) in Munich just a year ago, their World Cup record against “La Roja” is less fortunate. The only previous World Cup knockout meeting between the two occurred in 2010, where a David Villa goal ended Portuguese dreams and propelled Spain toward their first world title.

Coach Roberto Martínez will look to draw inspiration from that recent Nations League triumph, especially since both squads remain largely unchanged from the night in Munich. However, the path to the round of 16 has looked very different for these two heavyweights.

Contrast in Momentum

Spain enters the match as one of the tournament’s most balanced sides. Despite a surprising opening stalemate against Cape Verde, Luis de la Fuente’s men dominated Saudi Arabia and Uruguay to win Group H. Their defensive record is particularly imposing; following a 3-0 dismantling of Austria in the round of 32, Spain remains one of only two teams—alongside co-hosts Mexico—yet to concede a single goal in the tournament. Mikel Oyarzabal remains their primary threat, having already netted four goals.

In contrast, Portugal has struggled for consistency. The “Equipa das Quinas” finished second in Group K after lackluster draws with DR Congo and Colombia. They showed flashes of brilliance in a 5-0 rout of Uzbekistan, but needed a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Gonçalo Ramos to survive a 2-1 scare against Croatia in the previous round.

Martínez Faces Selection Dilemmas

With a spot in the final eight on the line, Martínez is expected to tinker with his lineup. While captain Cristiano Ronaldo is tipped to keep his starting spot, the hero of the Croatia match, Gonçalo Ramos, is putting significant pressure on the veteran forward. In midfield, Bernardo Silva is expected to return to the starting XI after beginning the last three games on the bench.

Defensively, Nélson Semedo could replace João Cancelo after an impressive cameo in Toronto, while Rúben Neves may be called upon to provide more defensive solidity against a high-octane Spanish midfield.

The match kicks off on Monday at 14:00 local time (20:00 in Lisbon). The winner will advance to the quarterfinals of the first-ever 48-team World Cup, which concludes on July 19.
