Argentina Beats Jordan 3-1: Messi’s Leadership & Lo Celso Goal

ARLINGTON, Texas – Argentina capped off their Group K campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over Jordan on Saturday, securing their momentum as they head into the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup. While stars like Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martínez found the back of the net, the night was defined by personal redemption and a display of selfless leadership.

Scaloni Praises Squad Depth and Messi’s Leadership

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of rotating the squad to ensure match fitness across the roster. “We are happy, especially because we gave minutes to all the players,” Scaloni told reporters. “They deserve it, and it was vital for them to experience playing in a World Cup.”

Scaloni took particular care with his defensive line, opting to rest Nahuel Molina and Gonzalo Montiel to avoid injury risks. However, his highest praise was reserved for captain Lionel Messi. Despite being in a position to inflate his tournament goal tally against the Jordanian defense, Messi requested to be substituted to allow his teammates playing time.

“He could have played the full 90 minutes and increased his statistics, but he preferred for his teammates to get minutes,” Scaloni said. “He preferred to think about what lies ahead, and that shows who he is. He doesn’t think about those numbers everyone talks about.”

Emotional Redemption for Lo Celso

The night was particularly poignant for Giovani Lo Celso, who opened the scoring for the Albiceleste. Having missed the 2022 World Cup due to a heartbreaking late injury, Lo Celso’s goal served as a moment of closure.

“It’s a huge emotion because I was finally able to play in a World Cup and debut with a goal,” Lo Celso said. “I went through a lot and I won’t forget this day. I was talking to Leo at halftime about my free-kick goal, and then he went out and scored his too.”

Martínez Finds His Rhythm, Simeone Makes His Mark

Lautaro Martínez, who faced criticism for a goal drought during the previous World Cup, fueled his confidence by netting Argentina’s second goal. “A goal is the most important thing for a striker,” Martínez noted. “I’ve prepared myself physically and mentally for this tournament, and it’s paying off.”

The match also marked a milestone for Giuliano Simeone, son of legendary coach Diego Simeone. Making his World Cup debut, the young attacker spoke of the advice he received from his father. “My father told me to enjoy it, to be myself, and to trust myself,” Simeone said. “Representing your country in a World Cup is the ultimate goal for anyone who plays football. It is an unforgettable night.”

Focus Shifts to Cape Verde

Despite the comfortable win, Scaloni warned against complacency as Argentina prepares to face Cape Verde in the next round. Dismissing suggestions that the matchup would be easy, Scaloni pointed to Cape Verde’s recent 0-0 draw against Spain as proof of their quality.

“Cape Verde is a fast team that plays well. For many, that’s not the case, but I can assure you they will make things difficult for us,” Scaloni warned. “It’s a lie to say they aren’t a tough opponent.”
