World Cup Hero Vozinha Honored with New Marine Species Name

In a unique crossover between marine biology and international football, a newly discovered species of sea slug has been named in honor of Cape Verde’s star goalkeeper, Vozinha. The tribute follows the veteran shot-stopper’s heroic performance during Cape Verde’s historic debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A Red Slug for a Golden Performance

Spanish researcher Jesús Ortea announced the discovery in the scientific publication Historias de la Bioadversidad. The new species, scientifically named Aldisa vozinhai, belongs to the nudibranch family—a group of colorful marine mollusks often referred to as sea slugs.

Ortea explained that the decision to name the species after the goalkeeper was inspired by Vozinha’s “prominent role” in Cape Verde’s opening World Cup match against Spain. The researcher specifically cited the mollusk’s “intense red coloration” as a fitting tribute to the passion and skill displayed by the Cape Verdean international on the world stage.

Decades in the Making

While the name is new, the specimens themselves were collected years ago. The species was identified using two specimens found in the Caribbean—one in Havana, Cuba, in 2001, and another on the island of Guadeloupe in 2012. Detailed anatomical analysis recently confirmed that these four-millimeter-long organisms were previously unknown to science.

Beyond the football tribute, Ortea stated that the naming is a gesture of gratitude toward the people of Cape Verde. The researcher has a deep connection to the archipelago; in 2023, the Cape Verdean government awarded him the Medal of Environmental Merit for his extensive work documenting the islands’ marine biodiversity.

Vozinha: The Wall of Cape Verde

Vozinha became a global sensation following a spectacular performance on June 15, where he held the powerhouse Spanish national team to a 0-0 draw. His string of acrobatic saves allowed the “Blue Sharks” to secure a point in their first-ever World Cup appearance.

Cape Verde is currently making waves in the tournament. Following draws against Spain (0-0) and Uruguay (2-2), the team faces Saudi Arabia this Friday. A win would secure their historic qualification for the knockout stages, further cementing the legacy of the goalkeeper who now shares his name with the deep red Aldisa vozinhai.
