Benjamim Corte-Real Leads International Portuguese Language Inst.

Timorese linguist Benjamim Corte-Real officially assumed the presidency of the General Assembly of the International Institute of the Portuguese Language (IILP) on Wednesday. Based in Cape Verde, the IILP is a specialized institution of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) dedicated to managing and promoting the language globally.

In his inaugural address, Corte-Real reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s dedication to championing the Portuguese language within the CPLP’s multilateral framework. He emphasized the necessity of collaboration among member states to bolster the IILP’s influence and elevate the international profile of the Portuguese language.

A Strategic New Role

Corte-Real’s appointment marks a milestone for the institution, as he becomes the first leader of the newly established General Assembly. This governing body was created during a recent revision of the IILP Statutes to enhance strategic guidance and allow member states to take a more active role in defining regional and global priorities.

He succeeds Abigail Tiny Cosme in the leadership role, stepping into the position at a time when the CPLP is seeking to modernize its linguistic diplomacy.

A Distinguished Academic Career

A prominent figure in Timorese academia, Benjamim Corte-Real brings significant linguistic expertise to the post. He earned his PhD in linguistics from Macquarie University in Australia and has served in several high-level roles within his home country, including rector of the National University of Timor-Leste and director of the National Institute of Linguistics.

While taking on these international responsibilities, Corte-Real continues to serve as a professor at the National University of Timor-Leste, bridging the gap between national education and international linguistic policy.
