Cape Verde Names Streets After World Cup Heroes & Vozinha
Following a string of heroic performances at the 2026 World Cup, the municipality of São Miguel has officially immortalized the nation’s footballing icons. On Tuesday, local officials inaugurated “Vozinha” and “Tubarão Azul” (Blue Shark) streets, celebrating a historic tournament run that has captivated the archipelago.
A Tribute to a National Wall
The dedication of “Vozinha” street honors Josimar Dias—better known as Vozinha—the national team’s veteran goalkeeper. His legendary status was cemented on June 15 after a masterful performance during a 0-0 draw against former world champions Spain. Facing a barrage of shots, Vozinha’s reflexes kept a clean sheet and secured a vital point for the underdogs.
During the ceremony, São Miguel Mayor Hermínio Fernandes described the goalkeeper as a “reference” for sports in Cape Verde, noting that his leadership and skill have projected the small nation onto the global stage. “He embodies the spirit of our people,” Fernandes remarked, as quoted by the Inforpress agency.
Honoring the “Blue Sharks”
The second street, “Tubarão Azul,” serves as a broader tribute to the entire national team—affectionately known as the Blue Sharks. The mayor emphasized that the street honors the players, technical staff, and federation officials who made the country’s World Cup dream a reality.
The unveiling took place in the Ponta Verde neighborhood as part of the festivities for St. John the Baptist, the local patron saint. It marks a moment of national pride, recognizing the unprecedented achievement of qualifying for and competing in a World Cup final stage for the first time.
Chasing the Round of 32
The timing of the ceremony coincides with Cape Verde’s critical final group stage match. After securing two hard-fought draws—0-0 against Spain and a 2-2 thriller against Uruguay—the Blue Sharks sit in a strong position. On Friday, they face Saudi Arabia, where a victory could secure their entry into the Round of 32 and continue their fairy-tale debut on the world’s biggest sporting stage.
