Cape Verde Stuns Uruguay: Kevin Pina Goal Makes History
Deep in the heart of Miami Gardens, Kevin Pina etched his name into the history books. With a thunderous free kick from over 30 meters out, the 29-year-old midfielder scored Cape Verde’s first-ever goal on the world’s biggest stage, helping the tournament debutants secure a thrilling 2-2 draw against heavyweights Uruguay at Hard Rock Stadium.
The Krasnodar midfielder opened the scoring in the 21st minute, a moment he described as one of pure emotion. “The word to describe it is pride,” Pina told reporters after being named FIFA’s Man of the Match. “In that moment, I paused for a second or two because I wanted to find my daughter in the stands and dedicate the goal to her.”
A Historic Performance
Cape Verde’s performance was no fluke. After holding European champions Spain to a scoreless draw in their opener, the “Blue Sharks” have become the first World Cup debutants in 24 years to remain undefeated through their first two matches. In a display of disciplined football, the African nation has committed just five fouls across two games—the lowest record among all 48 teams in the tournament.
While Pina’s long-range strike gave Cape Verde the lead, Uruguay fought back through Sporting CP’s Maxi Araújo (44 minutes) and Agustín Canobbio (45+6) to take a lead into halftime. However, Cape Verde refused to buckle, with substitute Hélio Varela finding the equalizer in the 61st minute to keep their dreams of the knockout stage alive.
Beyond Just Participating
“It might be a surprise to the world, but it isn’t for us,” Pina said of his team’s success. “We are here to fight, play head-to-head, and achieve our goals. We want to show the world that, coming from a small country, we deserve to be on this stage.”
For Uruguay, the result was bittersweet. Maxi Araújo, who now has two goals in the tournament, expressed frustration despite his individual success. “To be honest, my goal served no purpose,” Araújo admitted. “We have one game left and we have to win to secure qualification.” Araújo’s tally makes him the joint-highest scorer in World Cup history while playing for Sporting CP, joining the likes of Héctor Yazalde and Islam Slimani.
The Road Ahead
The Group H standings remain a wide-open puzzle. Spain leads the pack with four points, followed by Uruguay and Cape Verde with two points each, and Saudi Arabia with one. Every team in the group still has a mathematical chance to reach the round of 32.
Cape Verde will conclude their historic group stage campaign against Saudi Arabia this Friday. A win would likely secure a place in the next round, potentially as one of the great underdog stories of the 2026 World Cup. “We will continue together toward our goal,” Pina promised, “trying to bring joy to our people and all the people around the world who support us.”
