Uruguay Held by Cape Verde: World Cup Hopes in Jeopardy

MIAMI GARDENS, Florida – Uruguay’s World Cup campaign is hanging by a thread after a thrilling 2-2 draw against a resilient Cape Verde side on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium. Despite entering the match as heavy favorites, Marcelo Bielsa’s men were held to their second consecutive draw, leaving them with a win-or-go-home scenario for their final Group H fixture.

Bielsa Shoulders Blame as Uruguay Stutters

Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa did not mince words following the stalemate, taking full responsibility for his team’s inability to secure three points. Though Uruguay responded to an early Cape Verde opener by taking a 2-1 lead into halftime, they failed to kill the game in the second period.

“We started well, but it was hard for us to assimilate the setback of their first goal,” Bielsa told reporters. “In the second half, we had the ball, but we didn’t attack well. We didn’t close out the game, and we suffered for it. Near the end, it was a toss-up—we could have just as easily won as lost.”

With only two points from two matches, the pressure is mounting on the South American giants. “It’s bad to have drawn two games that were there to be won,” Bielsa admitted. “We have to face Spain with the obligation to win. It is a great challenge for me as the person responsible for us only having two points, and for the team, which must improve its image against a great opponent.”

Cape Verde: ‘A Small Country with a Giant Identity’

For Cape Verde, the draw was another statement of intent following their opening-round stalemate against Spain. Head coach Bubista praised his team’s grit and dismissed any notion that they are mere participants in the tournament.

“From the beginning, we said we wanted to compete at the highest level,” Bubista said. “We came here to chase a new dream: qualification for the knockout stage. After what we did against two world-class teams, it is legitimate to think that way.”

Bubista highlighted the cultural significance of the result, noting that Cape Verde’s performance serves as an inspiration beyond the pitch. “We are demonstrating that a country can be small and have financial difficulties, but with organization and resilience, it can compete with the greats. This team is the identity of our people.”

Controversy on the Pitch

The match was not without friction. Bubista expressed frustration over Uruguay’s equalizer, suggesting a lack of “fair play” during the buildup to the goal when a Cape Verde player was down.

“I got a bit annoyed, especially since Marcelo Bielsa is someone who taught us about fair play,” Bubista remarked. “Uruguay did not stop the game. It was a mix of errors on our part and their decision to play on, but it’s part of the game and our growth.”

Group H Decider

All four teams in Group H remain in contention heading into the final round. Uruguay faces a high-stakes showdown against Spain, while Cape Verde will look to secure their historic path to the Round of 16 against Saudi Arabia.

“We have to keep our feet on the ground,” Bubista warned. “Saudi Arabia also has a chance to qualify. We must have the right attitude and maximum seriousness. We want the world to know Cape Verde for who we are.”
