Cape Verde Holds Uruguay to 2-2 Draw in World Cup Debut

Cape Verde continued its fairy-tale debut at the 2026 World Cup on Sunday, securing a hard-fought 2-2 draw against heavyweights Uruguay. The result keeps the “Blue Sharks” unbeaten after two matches in the tournament’s group stage.

A Historic Milestone in Miami

Playing in Miami Gardens, Cape Verde wasted no time making history. In the 21st minute, Kevin Pina curled a stunning direct free kick into the net, marking the nation’s first-ever goal on the world’s biggest football stage. This historic strike followed their defensive masterclass in the opening round, where they held powerhouse Spain to a scoreless draw.

Uruguay Strikes Back

The two-time world champions, Uruguay, responded with clinical intensity late in the first half. Maximiliano Araújo found the equalizer in the 44th minute, and Agustín Canobbio completed a rapid-fire turnaround during stoppage time (45+6) to send the South Americans into the locker room with a 2-1 lead.

The Blue Sharks Refuse to Sink

Despite the momentum shift, Cape Verde showed remarkable resilience. In the 61st minute, Hélio Varela silenced the Uruguayan supporters by slotting home an equalizer to level the match at 2-2. The debutants then held firm against late pressure to secure their second point of the tournament.

Group H Stakes

The draw leaves the race for the knockout rounds wide open. After holding two former World Cup winners to draws, Cape Verde sits in third place in Group H with two points—tied with Uruguay and just two points behind group leaders Spain. Saudi Arabia currently occupies the bottom spot with one point.

The Blue Sharks’ fate will be decided in their final group stage match against Saudi Arabia, where a victory could propel the debutants into the round of 16.
