Spain Demolishes Saudi Arabia 4-0 in World Cup Statement

ATLANTA, United States – Spain looks like a World Cup contender once again. After a disappointing scoreless draw in their opening match, La Roja silenced critics on Sunday with a commanding 4-0 demolition of Saudi Arabia at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Spain Recovers Its Rhythm

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente expressed pride in his squad’s resilience following a tense week of scrutiny. “This team has an exceptional margin for evolution,” De la Fuente told reporters. “The players’ pride was wounded after the draw with Cape Verde. The criticism they faced actually encouraged them to react.”

The coach praised the team’s tactical adjustments and intensity, particularly in a dominant first half. “We regained our rhythm and corrected the aspects of our game that didn’t work the other day. It was a very positive performance that gives us peace of mind and confidence moving forward.”

Oyarzabal: The History-Maker

The standout performer of the night was Mikel Oyarzabal, who dismantled the Saudi defense with two goals and an assist in a scorching 24-minute spell. De la Fuente was quick to defend the forward against any lingering doubters.

“Those who understand football value Mikel very much. His impact on this national team is enormous—there is probably no other player in the world with such influence on their side,” De la Fuente said. “I would love for people in Spain to defend him more because he can go down in the history of the national team.”

Oyarzabal, however, remained humble about his match-winning contribution. “I didn’t need to prove anything,” the forward stated. “I feel loved and valued by my teammates and the coach. There will always be outside comments, but we remain calm and focused on the team’s success.”

Squad Management and Fitness

With an eye on the knockout stages, De la Fuente managed his stars’ minutes carefully. Rising talent Lamine Yamal was substituted at halftime, a move the coach confirmed was “planned” to ensure his fitness for the duration of the tournament. While Yamal and Nico Williams are reportedly in “perfect condition,” the coach noted that Víctor Muñoz is the next priority for the medical staff as he continues his recovery.

Saudi Arabia Struggles to Contain the Onslaught

For Saudi Arabia, the match was a harsh lesson in the gulf between the world’s elite and the rest of the field. Coach Georgios Donis admitted that his tactical plan—a five-man defensive line in a low block—failed to withstand the Spanish pressure.

“We faced one of the best national teams in the world,” Donis said. “We weren’t solid enough to contain Spain near our area and we made too many mistakes. When you adopt a low block, you must be very solid. That was our main problem.”

Spain now turns its attention to the final round of Group H, bolstered by a victory that re-establishes them as a force to be feared in the 2026 World Cup.
