Portugal’s Group Set for 2027 Handball World Championship
The Portuguese national handball team has learned its path for the 2027 World Championship. Following a draw held Monday at the historic Hofbräuhaus brewery in Munich, Portugal was placed in Group F alongside Poland, Algeria, and the Faroe Islands.
Portugal’s Path to Glory
Known as the ‘Heroes of the Sea,’ Portugal enters the tournament with high expectations. This marks their seventh appearance at the finals and their fourth consecutive qualification. The team is looking to build on the momentum of their historic fourth-place finish in 2025 and an impressive fifth-place showing at the 2026 European Championship.
As a seeded team in Pot 1, Paulo Jorge Pereira’s squad will play their preliminary round matches at the GETEC Arena in Magdeburg. While Poland—the 2007 finalists—stands as the toughest challenge in the group, Portugal is widely expected to navigate past Algeria and newcomers the Faroe Islands.
The Road to the Finals
If Portugal secures a top-three finish in Group F, they will advance to the Main Round in Hanover. The tournament structure then whittles 24 teams down into four groups of six. Only the top two teams from those pools will progress to the high-stakes knockout stages.
The business end of the tournament will shift to Cologne’s Lanxess Arena, which is set to host all 12 matches for the final eight teams, including the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the gold-medal match.
Global Giants Assemble
The draw has set the stage for several heavyweight clashes across Germany:
- Group G: Defending European champions Denmark face Angola, the United States, and Slovenia.
- Group A: Host nation Germany will enjoy home crowds in Munich against Uruguay, Tunisia, and Serbia.
- Group D: Six-time champions France lead a group featuring Kuwait, Brazil, and Argentina.
- Group C: Spain and Croatia headline a competitive pool alongside Turkey and Chile.
The 30th edition of the World Championship will run from January 13 to 31, 2027, featuring 32 nations competing across five German cities. For teams failing to reach the Main Round, the President’s Cup will take place in Magdeburg to determine the 25th through 32nd place rankings.
