Cape Verde President Honors Pope Leo XIV’s First Anniversary

Cape Verdean President José Maria Neves has sent a formal message of congratulations to Pope Leo XIV to mark the first anniversary of his papacy, praising the pontiff’s unwavering commitment to global peace and human dignity.

A Milestone for Church and State

In a statement released by the Presidency on Thursday, Neves expressed deep “admiration” for the Pope’s “inspiring leadership.” He highlighted the Holy Father’s consistent efforts to advocate for global stability and the fundamental rights of individuals during his first year in office.

The timing of the anniversary carries extra weight for the Lusophone nation. President Neves noted that 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Cape Verde and the Vatican. He conveyed the nation’s “gratitude” for five decades of “solidarity, friendship, and cooperation,” noting that the partnership has been a cornerstone of both the social and spiritual development of the archipelago.

Strengthening Historical Ties

The President concluded his message by reaffirming Cape Verde’s commitment to deepening its relationship with the Holy See. He emphasized a “continued will and desire” to strengthen the historical bonds of fraternity that unite the two states.

Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost of dual American and Peruvian nationality, was elected to the papacy on May 8, 2025. Following the conclave, he chose the name Leo XIV, succeeding Pope Francis as the head of the Catholic Church.
