Suspected Hantavirus Case Evacuated from Gran Canaria
A medical emergency involving a suspected hantavirus infection triggered an international logistical standoff this week, resulting in a specialized medical evacuation from the Canary Islands to the Netherlands.
Emergency Diversion to Gran Canaria
The patient, who began showing symptoms of the rodent-borne virus while aboard the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius, was initially being transported on a commercial aircraft from Praia, Cape Verde, to Amsterdam. The original flight plan included a refueling stop in Marrakech; however, Moroccan authorities denied the plane permission to land, forcing an emergency diversion to Gran Canaria on Wednesday afternoon.
Upon landing in the Spanish territory, the situation grew more complex. The flight crew reported a critical electrical failure in the aircraft’s onboard life support system. This malfunction required immediate repairs and grounded the flight for several hours, leaving the patient stranded on the runway.
Diplomatic and Medical Protocols
Strict health protocols governed the aircraft’s stay in Gran Canaria. The Spanish government authorized the stopover only on the condition that no passengers or crew members embarked or disembarked. While the regional Government of the Canary Islands proposed creating a specialized sanitary isolation zone to facilitate the flight’s continuation, the Spanish Ministry of Health rejected the proposal, opting for a higher-security solution.
Ultimately, a dedicated medical aircraft was dispatched from Northern Europe to Gran Canaria. The patient was safely transferred to this adapted plane and flown to Amsterdam for treatment. The original commercial aircraft later departed for Rotterdam with only its crew on board after a technical refueling stop in Valencia.
Cruise Ship Heads for Tenerife
As the patient receives care in the Netherlands, the MV Hondius continues its journey. The vessel was previously denied docking privileges by authorities in Cape Verde and is currently carrying 144 people. It is scheduled to dock at the port of Granadilla de Abona in southern Tenerife on Sunday afternoon.
Understanding Hantavirus
Hantaviruses are zoonotic diseases primarily transmitted by rodents. While various species of the virus circulate across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, only certain strains cause severe illness in humans. Clinical symptoms vary significantly depending on the specific geographical strain of the virus involved.
