Hantavirus Emergency: Patients Evacuated from Gran Canaria
Two patients suspected of being infected with the dangerous hantavirus have successfully been evacuated from Gran Canaria to Amsterdam following a high-stakes, multi-day medical emergency. The transfer was completed using a specialized medical transport aircraft under strict health and safety protocols, Spanish officials confirmed on Thursday.
A Transatlantic Medical Crisis
The ordeal began when the two patients were evacuated from the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius after showing symptoms of hantavirus, a rare and potentially fatal zoonotic disease typically carried by rodents. The aircraft carrying the patients was originally en route from Praia, Cape Verde, to Amsterdam, with a planned refueling stop in Marrakech, Morocco.
However, the mission faced immediate complications when Moroccan authorities denied the plane permission to land. This forced a diversion to Gran Canaria on Wednesday afternoon, sparking a complex diplomatic and logistical standoff on the Spanish tarmac.
Tensions on the Tarmac
The situation grew more dire upon landing in the Canary Islands when the crew reported an electrical failure in the life support system of one of the patients. The malfunction required immediate repairs, grounding the flight for several hours. To maintain biosecurity, the Spanish Government Delegation mandated that no person could board or disembark from the aircraft during the wait.
While the local Government of the Canary Islands offered to establish a sanitary isolation area to facilitate the flight’s departure, the Spanish Ministry of Health rejected the proposal. The standoff only ended when a specialized medical aircraft arrived from Northern Europe to safely take over the transport of the two patients.
The original commercial aircraft, now carrying only its crew, has since departed Gran Canaria. It made a technical refueling stop in Valencia before continuing to its final destination in Rotterdam.
The Cruise Ship Continues North
As the patients receive care in the Netherlands, the MV Hondius is still at sea. The cruise ship, carrying 144 people, was previously denied docking rights in Cape Verde and is now heading toward the Canary Islands. It is scheduled to dock at Granadilla de Abona in southern Tenerife on Sunday afternoon.
Understanding Hantavirus
Hantaviruses are a group of viruses primarily spread by rodents. While different species of the virus exist across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, certain strains can cause severe respiratory or hemorrhagic illnesses in humans. Because clinical manifestations can be life-threatening, authorities treat suspected cases with extreme caution, requiring the stringent isolation protocols seen during this week’s diversion.
