Cape Verde & Japan Launch Industrial Fishing Partnership

Cape Verde is looking to transform its fishing industry from a traditional trade into a modern industrial powerhouse, with Minister of the Sea Jorge Santos calling for a deeper strategic partnership with Japan. Speaking on the island of São Vicente, Santos emphasized that the archipelago seeks more than just foreign vessels in its waters; it wants Japanese technology, investment, and business expertise.

From Artisanal to Industrial: A Vision for Growth

“We want to have Japan as a partner for the industrialization of fishing in Cape Verde,” Santos stated. The minister explained that the goal is to foster direct collaboration between entrepreneurs from both nations. By leveraging Japan’s advanced science, equipment, and market reach, Cape Verde aims to modernize a sector that is vital to its national economy.

While a fishing agreement currently allows 35 Japanese vessels to operate starting 18 miles off the coast, Santos made it clear that the vision for the future is broader. “We want to see investments not only in the fishing sector but also in the blue economy in all its aspects,” he said, citing tourism, technology, and emerging business opportunities as key areas for growth.

Substantial Equipment Donation

The call for partnership came as the Japanese government delivered a significant package of equipment valued at over 2 million euros ($2.15 million). The donation, presented by Japanese Ambassador Izawa Osamu, is designed to bolster the archipelago’s artisanal fishing infrastructure.

The delivery includes:

  • 100 outboard motors for local boats
  • Three industrial ice-making machines
  • 50 thermal fish preservation boxes
  • Two refrigerated trucks for transport
  • Two seven-meter fishing vessels

This equipment will be distributed to professional associations on the islands of São Nicolau, Brava, and Santo Antão, providing immediate relief and modernization to local fishermen and vendors.

Broadening Bilateral Ties

The cooperation between the two nations extends beyond the sea. In addition to the industrial fishing push, Cape Verde and Japan are set to sign a food assistance agreement this Friday valued at 913,000 euros. This continued support highlights a strengthening diplomatic tie as Cape Verde tries to position itself as a hub for sustainable maritime industry in the Atlantic.
