World Cup Day 4: Germany & Sweden Dominate, Japan Draws Dutch

Germany and Sweden sent a clear message to the rest of the field on the fourth day of the 2026 World Cup, delivering crushing victories to open their campaigns. Meanwhile, the Netherlands suffered a late lapse in judgment, settling for a frustrating draw against a resilient Japanese side.

Germany Rebounds with Seven-Goal Statement

In Houston, four-time champions Germany began their quest for redemption with a clinical 7-1 demolition of Curaçao. Eager to erase the memory of consecutive group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022, Julian Nagelsmann’s side showed no mercy.

The “Mannschaft” faced a momentary shock when Livano Comenencia canceled out Felix Nmecha’s early opener in the 21st minute. However, the German machine quickly clicked into gear. Nico Schlotterbeck restored the lead in the 38th minute, and Kai Havertz converted a penalty deep into first-half stoppage time to make it 3-1.

The second half was one-way traffic. Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown, and Deniz Undav all found the net before Havertz completed his brace in the 88th minute. Germany now sits atop Group E, level on points with Ivory Coast, who secured a dramatic 1-0 win over Ecuador in Philadelphia thanks to a 90th-minute strike from Manchester United’s Amad Diallo.

Dutch Frustrated by Clinical Japan

Group F favorites the Netherlands endured a more complicated start in Arlington, twice surrendering a lead to draw 2-2 with Japan. Captain Virgil van Dijk broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, only for Keito Nakamura to equalize shortly after.

Crysencio Summerville appeared to have secured the win for the “Oranje” when he restored the lead in the 64th minute. However, a late surge from Japan forced a 22nd-minute equalizer from Daichi Kamada, leaving the Dutch with just a point from their opening fixture.

Swedish Stars Shine in Five-Goal Rout

Sweden took full advantage of the Dutch slip-up, thrashing Tunisia 5-1 in Guadalupe to claim the early lead in Group F. The Swedish attack, led by the formidable duo of Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres, proved too much for the African side to handle.

Yasin Ayari opened and closed the scoring with goals in the 7th and 96th minutes. Isak and Gyökeres showcased their chemistry, with the former Sporting striker assisting the Liverpool forward in the 30th minute before the roles were reversed in the 59th. Mattias Svanberg also added his name to the scoresheet in a dominant performance.

Looking Ahead: European Champions Take the Stage

The action continues as the tournament enters its fifth day. All eyes will be on reigning European champions Spain, led by teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, as they face World Cup debutants Cape Verde. With the heavyweights already setting a high bar, the pressure is on the tournament favorites to keep pace.
