World Cup 2026: Cape Verde Faces Argentina in Historic Match
MIAMI GARDENS, USA – As debutants Cape Verde prepare for a historic World Cup round-of-32 clash against defending champions Argentina, former Portuguese international and Cape Verdean native Oceano Cruz believes the “Blue Sharks” can continue their fairy-tale run if they lean into their greatest strength: unity.
The 63-year-old former midfielder, who earned 54 caps for Portugal and recently coached their youth national teams, admitted that the task ahead is daunting. Argentina enters the knockout stage in lethal form, led by a record-breaking Lionel Messi.
“It’s starting to get a bit more complicated now,” Cruz told Lusa. “Argentina is one of the teams in the best form. I see a very difficult path for Cape Verde, but it is possible to believe and continue dreaming, as long as they maintain the cohesion and unity shown in recent games.”
A Clash of David and Goliath
The match, set for Friday at 6:00 PM local time at Hard Rock Stadium, represents a massive milestone for Cape Verde. The island nation is the first debutant since 2010 to reach the knockout stages and the smallest country by both landmass and population to ever advance past the group stage in World Cup history.
Their journey has been nothing short of “sensational,” according to Cruz. Competing in a “Group of Death” alongside European champions Spain and perennial powerhouses Uruguay, Cape Verde survived undefeated. Three hard-fought draws—0-0 against Spain, 2-2 against Uruguay, and 0-0 against Saudi Arabia—secured their place in the history books.
“I’m not surprised, and I’ve been very pleased,” said Cruz, who was born on the island of São Vicente. “The national team fills all Cape Verdeans with pride. They qualified with full merit. They have a very difficult task now, but there’s no harm in dreaming.”
The Messi Factor
Standing in their way is a relentless Argentina side. “La Albiceleste” swept Group J with nine points, fueled by the ageless brilliance of 39-year-old Lionel Messi. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has already netted six goals in the tournament, including a hat-trick against Algeria, bringing his career World Cup total to a record-breaking 19 goals across six tournaments.
“Lionel Messi is in great form, but Argentina isn’t just Messi; the whole team plays well,” Cruz warned. “It will be a tough nut to crack. Cape Verde must respect the opponent, play as a team, stay cohesive, and take the opportunities they get. If they show great efficiency, a surprise could happen.”
A Turning Point for the Nation
Regardless of Friday’s result, Cruz hopes this unprecedented success serves as a catalyst for growth back home. Cape Verde is the 14th African nation to ever grace the World Cup stage, and one of an impressive nine African teams to reach this year’s knockout round.
“Cape Verde needs this result. The government needs to believe more in football and create infrastructure,” Cruz said. “The Cape Verdean player is talented but demonstrates almost all of their quality outside the country. They need better working conditions and a huge investment in youth development to continue dreaming of these major competitions.”
The world will be watching on Friday as the “Blue Sharks” face their third world champion of the tournament—a baptism by fire that has already proven the smallest of nations can compete on the grandest stage.
