Spain Takes #1 in FIFA Rankings After World Cup Victory
Spain has officially climbed to the top of the world. Following their dramatic extra-time victory over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final, the newly-crowned world champions have secured the number one spot in the latest FIFA rankings released on Monday.
The updated standings, the first since the conclusion of the tournament hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, see Spain leapfrog the previous leaders, Argentina. The South Americans, who held the top spot going into the competition, now sit in second place after their 1-0 defeat in Sunday’s final.
Portugal Slides Down the Standings
Portugal’s early exit from the World Cup has cost them their place in the top five. The “Equipa das Quinas” fell two spots to seventh place after being eliminated by Spain in the Round of 16. This marks Portugal’s lowest ranking since April 2025.
The shift comes as Brazil and Morocco both moved up the ladder to claim fifth and sixth place, respectively. France and England remain steady in the upper echelon, occupying the third and fourth positions.
Big Moves and Top 10 Shakes
The post-World Cup shuffle saw several notable changes among football’s elite. Belgium moved up to eighth, trading places with the Netherlands, who now sit ninth. Meanwhile, Germany’s disappointing campaign—which ended with a Round of 32 loss to Paraguay—resulted in them dropping out of the top 10 entirely.
Capitalizing on Germany’s fall, tournament co-host Mexico jumped from 14th to 10th place, rewarding their performance on home soil.
Rising Stars in Lusophone Football
Cape Verde emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest fairy tales. Making their debut appearance in a World Cup final phase and reaching the Round of 32, the “Blue Sharks” climbed three spots to 63rd in the world. They maintain their status as the second-highest ranked Portuguese-speaking nation, trailing only Brazil.
Other Lusophone nations saw varying results: Angola rose slightly to 87th, while Mozambique (103rd), Guinea-Bissau (132nd), Macau (193rd), São Tomé and Príncipe (195th), and Timor-Leste (201st) largely held their positions.
