Spain Favorites Over Argentina in 2026 World Cup Final

Spain enters Sunday’s 2026 World Cup final as the favorites over defending champions Argentina, according to Bruno Reis, an analyst for the Cape Verde national team. Having faced both finalists during Cape Verde’s Cinderella run to the knockout stages, Reis believes Spain’s tactical consistency gives them a slight edge over Lionel Messi’s “unpredictable” squad.

“I would give 60-40 favoritism to Spain,” Reis told Lusa news agency. “Not only due to their consolidated style but because they exploit an opponent’s weaknesses more effectively. Argentina is quite unpredictable; they can pull rabbits out of hats, but Spain has the upper hand in terms of structure.”

Tactical Mastery vs. Individual Magic

Reis, who helped lead Cape Verde to the Round of 32 in their tournament debut, noted that Spain has evolved significantly since their opening Group H draw against the Africans. He pointed to the rise of Lamine Yamal as a game-changer and described the Spanish midfield—led by Rodri, Fabián Ruiz, and Pedri—as the team’s greatest strength.

“They are no longer as restrained as they were against us,” Reis observed. “Spain is more capable of imposing themselves in the attacking third. Marc Cucurella’s high positioning on the left could force Argentina’s wingers deep, stripping the South Americans of their ability to press in midfield.”

The Messi Factor

Despite favoring the European champions, Reis warns against dismissing Argentina, largely due to the enduring brilliance of 39-year-old Lionel Messi. The legendary forward has been the heartbeat of the “Albiceleste,” heading into his third final in four editions with a staggering tournament record of 21 goals and 12 assists across his career.

“He is a completely out-of-the-box talent,” Reis admitted. “At 39, he makes an entire team of stars play. He is the best player of this World Cup. At a technical level, he remains superb.”

A Strategic Battle at MetLife Stadium

The final, set to take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, marks an unprecedented clash between the winners of Euro 2024 and the double Copa América champions (2021 and 2024). Reis expects a chess match rather than a lightning-fast counter-attacking game, as both sides prefer prolonged possession.

“Spain’s downside is that they are sometimes too attached to their specific way of playing. If Argentina can adapt to that, they can respond,” Reis concluded. “But overall, I suspect Spain can move the ball into the opponent’s half with more security and volume. That is why they are the favorites.”

Spain is chasing their second world title following their 2010 victory, while Argentina looks to secure their fourth star and go back-to-back after their 2022 triumph in Qatar.
