Portugal Invests €1M to Take 115 Art Projects Global
The Directorate-General for the Arts (DGArtes) has greenlit a €1.035 million investment to propel more than 100 Portuguese artistic projects onto the global stage. Spanning 58 countries across five continents, the initiative aims to cement Portugal’s reputation as a cultural powerhouse between September 2026 and February 2028.
Global Reach: From Brazil to South Korea
A total of 115 projects were selected for the Internationalization Project Support Program. Brazil leads as the primary destination with 49 projects, followed by Spain (29), Germany (12), and Italy (11). The circuit also extends to emerging markets and long-standing cultural partners, including the United States, Japan, Angola, Australia, and South Korea.
While the program celebrates a broad reach, the high demand for funding left many on the sidelines. According to DGArtes, 41 qualified projects were denied funding simply because the available budget had been exhausted, highlighting the competitive nature of the selection process.
Music and Theater Take Center Stage
Music is the primary beneficiary of the new funding, with 46 projects receiving over €381,000. High-profile tours include the Portuguese Philharmonic Orchestra, the Danças Ocultas tour of Canada, and performances by Ana Lua Caiano and the Matosinhos and Guimarães String Quartets. The lineup also features the high-profile Fado Brasil Festival.
Theater follows closely with 26 funded projects (€258,560), and dance ranks third with 18 projects (€150,225). Other supported disciplines include visual arts, photography, circus arts, and even a chamber opera titled “Não há Machado que Corte” by AREPO. Architecture and new media projects were also awarded grants to foster innovation abroad.
Strategic Cultural Diplomacy
Beyond mere performance, the DGArtes program serves as a tool for cultural diplomacy. A key priority is strengthening ties with Portuguese-speaking nations and Latin American neighbors. Additionally, the initiative focuses on building bilateral relations with the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and Turkey.
Promoting Values Through Art
The program’s objectives extend beyond the stage. DGArtes emphasized that the chosen projects must align with modern social and environmental goals, including:
- Environmental Sustainability: Encouraging green practices in international touring.
- Digital Transition: Integrating technology into artistic expression.
- Social Inclusion: Promoting gender equality, accessibility, and diverse representation within the arts.
By facilitating international residencies and integration into global networks, this €1 million investment seeks to ensure that Portuguese playwrights, composers, and visual artists are not just seen locally, but are influential players in the global cultural conversation.
