Portugal Bolsters Cape Verde Emergency Services Post-Tragedy
The Portuguese Red Cross (CVP) is playing a pivotal role in transforming Cape Verde’s emergency medical infrastructure, a partnership that recently proved its worth during a devastating tragedy on Fogo Island.
According to a statement released by the CVP today, the ongoing collaboration was put to the ultimate test just one month ago following a catastrophic road accident on Fogo Island that claimed 25 lives. The Cape Verde Red Cross (CVCV) successfully mobilized specialized teams specifically trained under this bilateral protocol to assist in the massive recovery and rescue operation.
Building a Rapid Response Network
António Saraiva, President of the Portuguese Red Cross, emphasized that the partnership focuses on long-term sustainability rather than just immediate aid. The cooperation aims to ensure the CVCV possesses “better-prepared professionals, adequate means, and the capacity for rapid emergency response.”
The initiative operates on three primary fronts: intensive professional training, the delivery of modern operational resources, and strategic support for implementing Immediate Life Support (ILS) protocols across the archipelago.
From Training to the Front Lines
The transformation began in earnest in August 2025 with a “train-the-trainers” program, allowing local professionals to eventually lead their own education modules. Throughout August and September 2026, the program shifted to specialized ambulance crew training, tailored specifically to the unique geographical and logistical challenges of Cape Verde.
Beyond human expertise, the CVP has reinforced local resources by delivering fully equipped ambulances. Following the recent training cycles, the organizations have drafted formal recommendations to structure a permanent pre-hospital emergency model adapted to the Cape Verdean context.
Looking ahead, the Portuguese Red Cross will continue to monitor the development of the CVCV’s new dedicated Emergency Unit, ensuring that the skills acquired during this partnership become a permanent pillar of the nation’s healthcare system.
