Paulo Veiga Wins MpD Leadership Race in Cape Verde
Paulo Veiga has officially declared victory in the race to lead Cape Verde’s main opposition party, the Movement for Democracy (MpD). The announcement follows the final tally of votes from the island of Fogo, where polling had been delayed due to a national tragedy.
A Decisive Mandate for Change
The election on Fogo was postponed for one week following a devastating road accident that claimed 25 lives, plunging the nation into mourning. With the island’s results now in, Veiga confirmed his lead over his rivals.
“Our candidacy won in Fogo, confirming our victory in these elections,” Veiga stated. He revealed that his primary opponent, Hermínio Fernandes, had already called to concede and offer congratulations. Veiga emphasized that his new role comes with a heavy mandate: “to bring everyone together” and “rebuild the party.”
The Numbers Behind the Victory
While the party has yet to release the finalized official tallies, provisional counts indicate a competitive race. Before the Fogo results were added, Veiga held 3,867 votes, leading Hermínio Fernandes (3,512 votes) and Luís Filipe Tavares (679 votes).
Veiga, a 51-year-old Praia native, brings a diverse background to the leadership. Educated in the United States, he is a seasoned businessman and veteran politician who previously served as Minister of the Sea and led the MpD’s parliamentary bench.
Returning to Roots: ‘A Vision that Unites’
Veiga will officially present his strategy, titled “A Vision that Unites,” at the party convention scheduled for September 25–27. His platform focuses on restoring the MpD to its traditional identity as a centrist, humanist, and cross-class civic movement.
“We do not need to win over voters from the opponent,” Veiga argued in his campaign document. “We need to bring back those who have always been part of our family and open our house to those who have not yet entered but have always been welcome.”
A New Chapter for the MpD
Veiga succeeds Ulisses Correia e Silva, who stepped down following the MpD’s electoral defeat in May. That loss ended a 10-year period of MpD governance, handing an absolute majority to the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), led by Francisco Carvalho.
The current National Assembly is composed of 37 PAICV seats, 33 MpD seats, and two seats held by the Independent and Democratic Cape Verdean Union (UCID). Veiga now faces the challenge of unifying a divided party and positioning it as a formidable challenger to the PAICV’s absolute majority ahead of future elections.
