Historical Highlights
On this day in 1957, the Space Age officially began. The USSR successfully launched Sputnik 1, the world’s first artificial satellite, into orbit. The beach-ball-sized orbiter changed the course of the 20th century, sparking the Cold War space race.
In 1970, the music world lost a legend. Iconic American rock and soul singer Janis Joplin died in Los Angeles at the age of 27, just weeks after the death of Jimi Hendrix.
In 1992, a major breakthrough for African diplomacy occurred in Rome. Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano and Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama signed a definitive Peace Treaty, ending a brutal 15-year civil war that had devastated Mozambique.
