Óbidos Debuts Babel Classroom AI for Foreign Students

The town of Óbidos has launched a groundbreaking real-time translation platform designed to bridge the language gap for foreign students in Portuguese classrooms. The initiative, announced today, aims to ensure that non-native speakers can follow their lessons as they happen, fostering a more inclusive and equitable educational environment.

Breaking the Language Barrier in Real-Time

Named “Babel Classroom,” the platform allows teachers to conduct their lessons naturally in Portuguese while their speech is automatically transcribed and translated. The technology can provide simultaneous translations in up to four different languages, which appear in a dedicated window for students to follow on their devices. This real-time support is designed to encourage active participation from students who might otherwise struggle to keep pace with the curriculum.

The project is the result of a diverse partnership between the Óbidos Municipal Council, the Josefa de Óbidos School Group, the Óbidos Technological Park, and the local tech firm ImpactWave. According to the municipality, the tool was “designed to promote the inclusion of non-native speaking students and reinforce equity in access to learning.”

A Global Classroom in a Local Town

The need for such a tool has become increasingly urgent as the student population in the Oeste region becomes more diverse. Data from the Óbidos Municipal Council reveals that local schools are now home to students from approximately 50 different nationalities—ranging from South Africa, China, and Ukraine to Brazil, Nepal, and the United States.

In Óbidos alone, there are currently around 200 foreign students. Teachers identified the need for a technological solution after facing daily challenges in integrating newcomers into the Portuguese school system. “The main goal is to keep the foreign student within the class and the class within the curriculum,” said Ricardo Cardoso, CEO of ImpactWave.

Smart Technology for Modern Schools

Babel Classroom utilizes Artificial Intelligence specifically tailored for the school environment. The system includes features for correcting transcriptions and linguistically adapting educational content. To ensure the technology doesn’t disrupt the classroom flow, teachers use discrete noise-canceling Bluetooth microphones that integrate naturally into their teaching style.

The platform underwent a rigorous three-week trial with teachers of the 2nd and 3rd cycles of basic education across various subjects. José Santos, director of the Josefa de Óbidos School Group, noted during the public presentation that the trial validated the platform’s potential to enhance pedagogical monitoring and equity.

While launched in Óbidos, the creators of Babel Classroom have much larger ambitions. According to Cardoso, the platform was built from the ground up to scale globally, offering the potential to support millions of non-native students in classrooms around the world.
