Macau and Angola Launch Visa Waiver to Boost Trade Ties
Travel and trade between Macau and Angola are set to become significantly easier following the signing of a landmark mutual visa waiver agreement on Wednesday. The deal allows residents of both jurisdictions to enter the respective territories for up to 30 days without the need for a prior visa.
A New Chapter for Tourism and Trade
During the official signing ceremony, Macau’s Secretary for Administration and Justice, Wong Sio Chak, emphasized that the agreement will “significantly facilitate the lives” of residents, particularly those engaged in tourism, academic exchange, and international trade.
Secretary Wong framed the move as a bridge for cultural connection, stating the measure would “promote greater interaction” and “deepen civilizational exchange and cultural fusion” between the Chinese Special Administrative Region (SAR) and the Southern African nation.
“We take this opportunity to invite more friends from Angola to visit, invest in, and travel to Macau, to experience the vitality, inclusion, and opportunities that this city offers,” Wong added.
Breaking Down Bureaucratic Barriers
Eduardo Velasco Galiano, Angola’s consul in Macau and delegate to the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macau Forum), hailed the agreement as a long-awaited solution to logistical hurdles.
Galiano noted that, in the past, potential business deals often collapsed because of the complexities of securing travel permits. “On several occasions, businessmen from both sides were forced to pull back,” he said. “This gesture not only resolves these bureaucratic barriers but also definitively dispels the uncertainty that loomed over our trade relations, opening doors to a future of greater prosperity.”
Strengthening Lusophone Ties
Angola joins Portugal, Brazil, and Cape Verde as the fourth Portuguese-speaking nation to benefit from Macau’s visa exemption regime. The move reinforces Macau’s strategic role as a commercial and cultural platform between China and the Lusophone world.
According to the Macau Identification Services Bureau, the 30-day visa-free stay applies to Macau SAR passport holders entering Angola and Angolan passport holders entering Macau. While the agreement has been finalized, the specific date it will officially take effect is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
