Haaland Wins Goal of World Cup Round of 16: Norway Dethrones Brazil

Erling Haaland’s stunning second goal in Norway’s historic 2-1 upset over Brazil has been officially crowned the best strike of the 2026 World Cup Round of 16. FIFA announced the result today following a global fan vote on its official website.

A Clinical Brace Sinks the Seleção

The 25-year-old Manchester City superstar proved why he is the world’s most feared striker with a masterclass in clinical finishing. After putting Norway ahead in the 79th minute by outleaping Gabriel Magalhães for a powerful header, Haaland saved his best for the 90th minute.

Receiving service from Benfica’s Andreas Schjelderup at the edge of the Brazilian penalty area, Haaland expertly controlled the ball with his right foot, shifted it to his left to find a sliver of space, and unleashed a low, thunderous drive into the bottom corner. Brazil’s veteran goalkeeper Alisson could only watch as the ball whistled past him, sealing one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.

Haaland Dominates the Polls

Haaland’s match-winner captured 34% of the total vote, beating out legendary competition. Lionel Messi secured 25% for his equalizer in Argentina’s 3-2 comeback against Egypt, while Morocco’s Azzedine Ounahi took third place with 16% for his opener against co-hosts Canada.

This accolade adds to Haaland’s soaring reputation in his debut World Cup. With seven goals in just four matches, he has been the primary engine behind Norway’s return to the world stage after a 28-year absence. His goals secured Norway a spot in the quarterfinals for the first time in the nation’s history.

The Road Ahead

While past goal-of-the-round winners like Eldor Shomurodov (Uzbekistan) and Sidny Lopes Cabral (Cape Verde) have seen their teams eliminated, Haaland’s journey continues. Norway is set to face England this Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida. A victory there would put Norway in a semifinal clash against either Switzerland or defending champions Argentina.

For Brazil, the tournament ends in heartbreak. The five-time champions, and the only nation to appear in every single World Cup, now head home after failing to contain the “Norwegian Viking.”

FIFA confirmed that two more voting rounds remain: one combining the quarterfinals and semifinals, and a final vote to determine the goal of the tournament following the championship match.
