Guinea-Bissau Mourns with Cape Verde After Fatal Bus Crash
Guinea-Bissau’s transitional President, General Horta Inta-a, has expressed “profound dismay” following a horrific road accident on Fogo Island, Cape Verde, that claimed 25 lives and left many others injured.
A Message of Solidarity Amid National Mourning
In a formal message to Cape Verdean President José Maria Neves, General Inta-a extended his deepest condolences to the families of the victims on behalf of the people of Guinea-Bissau. He further offered his wishes for a “speedy and full recovery” for those injured in the disaster.
The tragedy occurred on Saturday night when a bus transporting students back from an excursion careened off the road in the locality of Campanas de Cima. The vehicle plunged approximately 30 meters, killing 25 people—the majority of whom were children and young adults—and injuring 14 others. The accident has sparked a wave of national mourning across the Cape Verdean archipelago.
President Inta-a emphasized the “unshakeable bonds” of solidarity and “profound friendship” that unite the two nations, despite recent diplomatic friction. His sentiments were echoed by transitional Prime Minister Ilídio Vieira Té, who sent a separate message of condolence to his Cape Verdean counterpart, Francisco Tavares.
Diplomatic Context: A Thaw in Relations?
The outreach from Bissau comes at a sensitive time for the two Lusophone nations. Relations were officially strained in July when Guinea-Bissau’s National Transition Council (CNT) announced a “practical freeze” on political ties with Cape Verde.
The CNT, which assumed parliamentary powers following a coup last November, had accused the Cape Verdean government of interfering in its internal affairs. The dispute was triggered by Cape Verde’s public appeal for the release of Guinea-Bissau’s opposition leader and elected parliament president, Domingos Simões Pereira, who remains held under military court orders.
While the CNT previously rejected Cape Verde’s legitimacy to comment on its judicial processes, this high-level response to the Fogo Island tragedy suggests that humanitarian solidarity remains a priority over political discord.
