Gil Vicente Signs David Moreira from Sporting CP until 2029

Gil Vicente has bolstered its defensive ranks with the signing of 22-year-old David Moreira from Sporting CP. The Cape Verde international joins the Barcelos-based club on a long-term deal that keeps him at the Estádio Cidade de Barcelos until 2029.

A versatile defender capable of playing both at left-back and as a central defender, Moreira arrives in Minho after a 15-year tenure at Sporting. During his time in Lisbon, he rose through the ranks as a youth captain and became a mainstay for the “Lions” U-23 side. His progression culminated in his inclusion in the senior squad during the 2024/25 season, where he was part of the roster that secured the Portuguese Cup title.

A Strategic Exchange

Moreira’s move to Gil Vicente is part of a broader transaction between the two clubs. While the defender heads north to Barcelos, Gil Vicente confirmed that 18-year-old forward Rodrigo Rodrigues is moving in the opposite direction. Rodrigues, a Portuguese youth international who has already debuted for Gil Vicente’s first team, will continue his development at Sporting.

For Moreira, the move marks his first opportunity to compete regularly in the Portuguese top flight. He also brings international experience to the squad, having earned four caps for the Cape Verde national team.

Gil Vicente’s Busy Transfer Window

Under the leadership of new head coach Luís Pinto, the “Roosters” have been active in the market as they gear up for the 2026/27 campaign. Moreira becomes the club’s fifth summer signing, joining an increasingly diverse squad that includes:

  • Ricardo Esgaio: Experienced defender arriving from Turkey’s Karagümrük.
  • Andreas Lausen: Danish midfielder signed from Esbjerg.
  • Diogo Prioste: Midfielder joining on loan from Benfica.
  • Walace França: Brazilian forward on loan from Athletico Paranaense.

The club statement emphasized that Moreira provides a “vital solution” for the defensive sector as the team continues its pre-season preparations.
