Georgios Donis Replaces Hervé Renard as Saudi Arabia Coach

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation announced on Thursday that Georgios Donis has been appointed as the new head coach of the national team. The 56-year-old Greek tactician steps into the role following the shock dismissal of Hervé Renard just two months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A Veteran of Saudi Football Takes the Reins

Donis, who has signed a contract running through July 2027, is no stranger to the region. He joins the national setup from Al Khaleej and boasts an extensive resume within the Saudi Pro League, having previously managed heavyweights Al Hilal, as well as Al Fateh and Al Wehda. Outside of the Middle East, his career includes successful stints at top Greek clubs Panathinaikos, AEK Athens, and PAOK, along with a trophy-laden period at Cyprus’s APOEL Nicosia.

The Challenge of Replacing Hervé Renard

The appointment comes amidst high drama. Donis replaces Frenchman Hervé Renard, whose departure stunned fans despite his status as the most successful coach in the nation’s history. Renard famously led the “Green Falcons” to two World Cups, including the historic 2022 campaign in Qatar where Saudi Arabia defeated eventual champions Argentina in the group stage and advanced to the knockout rounds.

Global Stage Awareness: Group H Awaits

As Saudi Arabia prepares for its seventh World Cup appearance—and its third in a row—Donis will have little time to settle. The team faces a challenging Group H, where they are scheduled to play against powerhouse Spain, South American giants Uruguay, and tournament debutants Cape Verde.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, marks a historic shift for the tournament as it expands to feature 48 teams for the first time. Donis follows in the footsteps of several international predecessors, including Portuguese managers Nelo Vingada and José Peseiro, as he looks to cement Saudi Arabia’s place as a rising force in global football.
