DE-CIX and CVTelecom Launch New South Atlantic Data Corridor
Global internet exchange giant DE-CIX and Cabo Verde Telecom (CVTelecom) have officially joined forces to explore the creation of a transformative South Atlantic interconnection corridor. The two companies signed a letter of intent on Monday, aiming to link Lisbon, Portugal, directly to São Paulo, Brazil.
A More Direct Path for Global Data
The planned corridor is designed to bypass traditional, congested traffic hubs in Northern Europe and North America. By providing a more direct route, the project will allow networks across Southern Europe, West Africa, and Latin America to exchange data with significantly lower latency and higher efficiency.
According to a joint statement, the collaboration seeks to enhance the “resilience, diversity, and performance” of intercontinental connectivity, reducing global reliance on a handful of established digital gateways.
Reciprocal Infrastructure Access
As part of the agreement, the two operators intend to interconnect their respective infrastructures. CVTelecom will provide the critical transport capacity between Lisbon and São Paulo. In exchange, DE-CIX will open its massive global ecosystem to the Cape Verdean operator.
The partnership grants CVTelecom access to DE-CIX services in major global hubs, including Frankfurt, Madrid, Marseille, New York, and São Paulo. Conversely, DE-CIX will gain dedicated transatlantic transport capacity, strengthening its footprint in the Southern Hemisphere.
Connecting Three Continents
“Digital growth increasingly depends on resilient, diversified, and geographically distributed connectivity,” said Theresa Bobis, Head of Emerging Wholesale Markets at DE-CIX. “More direct data routes can improve performance, strengthen infrastructure resilience, and open new opportunities for businesses and network operators across all three regions.”
For Cabo Verde Telecom, the move is a major play to position the island nation as a central digital hub. “This represents an important step in strengthening Cape Verde’s position as a strategic digital gateway between Africa, Europe, and the Americas,” said Isa Neves, Chief Marketing Officer of CVTelecom.
Neves added that the partnership would drive digital development not only for Cape Verde but for the entire West African region, creating new value for customers through improved access to international digital services.
While the letter of intent establishes the preliminary framework for the cooperation, it sets the stage for a new era of South Atlantic digital infrastructure.
