Cape Verde’s Cesária Évora Banknote Named Best in Africa
The Bank of Cape Verde (BCV) is celebrating a major international accolade as its 2,000 escudo banknote, featuring the legendary “Barefoot Diva” Cesária Évora, has been crowned the “Best African Banknote in Circulation of 2026.”
A Victory for Culture and Design
In a competition organized by IBNS Mosaic—a division of the International Bank Note Society (IBNS)—the Cape Verdean note triumphed over entries from 42 other African nations. The banknote secured the top spot with an impressive score of 80.85 points.
“The distinction highlights the design and cultural value of the banknote, as well as the way the Bank of Cape Verde represents the country’s history and identity through its currency,” said Serhiy Trushyn, regional director of the IBNS.
Honoring a Global Icon
First issued in 2024, the 2,000 escudo note serves as a permanent tribute to Cesária Évora. The central bank described the world-renowned singer, who passed away in 2011 at the age of 70, as an “essential figure of Cape Verdean culture and an ambassador beyond borders.”
Évora, known for her soulful morna music, brought Cape Verdean rhythms to the global stage, often performing barefoot as a sign of solidarity with the poor of her nation. Her presence on the currency ensures her legacy continues to circulate daily among the people she represented.
