Cape Verde Legend Stopira Retires After 18-Year Career

Cape Verdean football legend Stopira has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable 18-year career with the “Blue Sharks.”

The 38-year-old defender, currently playing for Portuguese side Torreense, shared the news via social media on the first anniversary of Cape Verde’s historic qualification for the 2026 World Cup. His decision marks the end of an era for a player who became a symbol of the national team’s rise on the global stage.

A Heartfelt Farewell

“Today, after 18 years of proudly wearing the National Team shirt, the time has come to say goodbye,” Stopira wrote. Reflecting on a career that spanned nearly two decades, he recalled the “years of sacrifices, joys, tears, victories, and defeats” that defined his journey.

The veteran defender expressed deep gratitude to his coaches, teammates, and support staff, while offering a special tribute to the fans. “I am leaving the national team, but Cape Verde will never leave me,” he added, wishing the Blue Sharks continued success in the future.

A Legacy of History-Making

Stopira’s retirement follows Cape Verde’s most successful period in its footballing history. He was a key member of the squad that competed in the 2026 World Cup across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The team captured the world’s attention by reaching the round of 32, where they were eventually eliminated by Argentina.

Beyond his international exploits, Stopira has enjoyed a long and productive career in Portugal. He is currently in his sixth season in the country and his third with Torreense, where he recently scored a decisive goal in a historic Taça de Portugal victory. His Portuguese career also includes successful stints at Santa Clara (2008–2010) and Feirense (2011/12).

While he steps away from the international limelight, Stopira leaves behind a legacy as one of the most dedicated and influential players to ever represent the archipelago.
