Cape Verde Approves Banco Interatlântico Rebrand to CGD
The Bank of Cape Verde (BCV) has officially approved a major rebranding for one of the country’s key financial institutions, authorizing Banco Interatlântico to operate under the name Caixa Geral de Depósitos Cabo Verde.
In a statement released Monday, the central bank confirmed the name change, noting that the new branding meets all regulatory requirements. The BCV determined that the name “does not cause confusion in the financial markets or among the general public” and adheres to the essential principles of “truth, clarity, and fidelity.”
Strengthening the CGD Brand
The move marks a strategic shift for the Portuguese banking giant Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) as it consolidates its presence in the Cape Verdean market. During a visit to the archipelago in January, CGD CEO Paulo Macedo signaled the group’s intent to leverage its international reputation to grow its local operations.
Banco Interatlântico has become the group’s primary vehicle in the country following CGD’s divestment from Banco Comercial do Atlântico (BCA). By adopting the parent company’s name, the bank aims to align itself more closely with the prestige of a “150-year-old bank” that has undergone significant modernizations in technology and customer service.
Strategic Growth
Macedo emphasized that the rebranding is more than just a name change; it is an effort to “strengthen Caixa’s own image” within Cape Verde. The group expects the new identity to reflect the stability and innovation associated with the CGD brand, providing a stronger platform for future development in the Atlantic nation.
