Bino Branco, Funaná Legend and Ferro Gaita Founder, Dies at 56
Carlos Alberto Pereira Lopes, the legendary lead singer and founder of the Cape Verdean musical powerhouse Ferro Gaita, has died at the age of 56. Known professionally as Bino Branco, the musician passed away on Saturday in the United States following a battle with cancer, family sources confirmed.
A Champion of Funaná
Branco was a transformative figure in Cape Verdean music. In 1996, he co-founded Ferro Gaita with a mission to reclaim the traditional roots of funaná. At the time, the genre was increasingly dominated by electronic synthesizers; Branco and his bandmates sought to restore the raw, acoustic energy of the music, centered around the gaita (accordion) and the ferrinho (a serrated metal percussion instrument).
As a virtuoso of the ferrinho and a charismatic vocalist, Branco helped catapult the group to international fame. Their 1997 debut album, Fundu Baxu, became a cultural phenomenon, resonating deeply within Cape Verde and across the global diaspora. Over three decades, Ferro Gaita released seven original albums and toured extensively across Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
A Cultural Legacy
Beyond his work with Ferro Gaita, Branco was a dedicated preservationist of Santiago island’s traditional rhythms, including batuku and tabanka. His contributions were recognized at the highest levels of government. In 2007, the group was awarded the National Medal of Cultural Merit, and in 2024, they partnered with the Ministry of Culture to ensure funaná was protected as a piece of national intangible heritage.
In June 2026, the Cape Verdean government awarded Branco a state pension of 75,000 escudos (approximately €680) per month. The decree cited his “exceptional contribution to national culture” and acknowledged the severe financial and physical toll of his illness.
Final Battle
Branco had been receiving medical treatment in the United States since 2025. The “serious oncological disease” eventually left him unable to perform, cutting off his primary source of income and creating significant financial hardship for his family. Despite his health struggles, Branco’s impact on the music world remained undiminished.
He is remembered not only as a master instrumentalist and composer but as a cultural ambassador who brought the soulful, driving beats of Cape Verde to the global stage.
