Azores Boosts Vineyard Funding with €1.8 Million Initiative
The Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Food has launched the second application phase for the “VITIS” and “VITIS – Biological” programs. With a total budget of €1.785 million, the initiative aims to modernize and restructure vineyards across the Autonomous Region.
The funding is split into two streams: €1.685 million for general vineyard restructuring and €100,000 specifically dedicated to organic (biological) viticulture. Agriculture Secretary António Ventura described the program as a “strategic instrument” designed to foster sustainable growth while preserving the unique quality of Azorean wines.
Growers have until September 30 to apply for the 2026-2027 campaign funding.
Consular Meeting in Ponta Delgada to Honor Foreign Residents
Regional President José Manuel Bolieiro will chair the 5th Azores Consular Meeting this Wednesday at the Palácio da Conceição. The annual summit brings together the accredited consular corps to discuss the challenges and integration of foreign communities living in the islands.
This year’s meeting features a special tribute to the five largest foreign populations in the Azores: Brazilian (1,449 citizens), German (740), Cape Verdean (704), American (667), and Spanish (470). Guests from each nationality will share personal testimonies about their lives in the archipelago.
The government noted that past meetings have already yielded practical results, such as a recent agreement with the Agency for Integration, Migrations and Asylum (AIMA) to expand immigration services from just two locations to 55 service points across all nine islands.
“Azores Day” Set to Headline EXPOFACIC in Cantanhede
The prestigious Agricultural, Commercial, and Industrial Exhibition of Cantanhede (EXPOFACIC) will celebrate “Azores Day” this Friday. Organized by the Casa dos Açores of the Central Region, the event commemorates the 50th anniversary of the region’s autonomy.
The festivities begin at 6:00 PM at the Cantanhede Municipal Library with a tasting of traditional Azorean products. Highlights include a conference titled “Azores and Coimbra, the Sea that Unites Us,” led by Professor Carlos Robalo Cordeiro of the University of Coimbra, and a musical performance blending Azorean sounds with the traditional Fado of Coimbra.
Carlos Machado Museum Celebrates Traditional Embroidery
In honor of World Embroidery Day, the Carlos Machado Museum is launching a new exhibition this Thursday titled “Embroiderers of Maia.”
The exhibit showcases the intricate work of a group of women from Ribeira Grande who meet weekly to preserve age-old techniques passed down through generations. Visitors can view a variety of traditional styles—including satin stitch, Hardanger, and cross stitch—at the Santo André Center in Ponta Delgada. The exhibition runs through October 11, 2026, highlighting the region’s commitment to protecting its intangible cultural heritage.
