AI and Digital Shifts Transform Lusophone Universities

Lusophone higher education institutions are entering an era of “profound transformation” driven by the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and the digital revolution, according to the president of the Association of Portuguese Language Universities (AULP).

AI Redefining the Academic Landscape

Opening the 35th AULP Meeting in Macau on Monday, Astrigilda Silveira told an audience of global academic leaders that the technological landscape is shifting beneath their feet. “Artificial intelligence is changing the way we produce, share, and utilize knowledge,” Silveira said. “Digital transformation is redefining the very processes of teaching, learning, and research.”

The three-day summit brings together 36 rectors and presidents from higher education institutions across Portuguese-speaking nations. The gathering coincides with the 4th Forum of Rectors from China, Macau, and Portuguese-speaking Countries, highlighting Macau’s role as a bridge for international academic cooperation.

Collaborative Solutions for Global Crises

Beyond technology, Silveira addressed the existential threat of climate change, noting that it disproportionately affects small island states and coastal regions within the Lusophone community. She argued that universities must act as “leaders and promoters of change,” shaping a new generation of professionals committed to sustainable development.

“No university, no matter how strong, can respond to major global challenges alone,” warned Silveira, who also serves as the rector of the University of Cape Verde. “We need collaborative science, research networks, and the sharing of infrastructure, knowledge, and talent.”

Portuguese: A Language of Science and Innovation

The AULP head outlined a strategic vision for the coming years, calling for increased ambition in internationalizing scientific production written in Portuguese. She described the language as a “strategic asset” and a platform for building global solutions.

Key priorities identified for the association include:

  • Strengthening scientific collaboration between member states.
  • Accelerating the digital and energy transitions.
  • Expanding opportunities for student and researcher mobility.
  • Promoting Portuguese as a premier language for innovation and science.

Portugal to Launch AI Model ‘Amélia’

Adding a tangible milestone to the digital discussion, Portugal’s Minister of Education, Science, and Innovation, Fernando Alexandre, announced that “Amélia”—a dedicated Portuguese-language AI model—will be officially presented later this month.

The Portuguese government has classified the Amélia project as strategic, intending for the AI to support students and teachers with tools specifically tailored to the Portuguese linguistic and cultural context. The initiative underscores the broader push to ensure Lusophone countries remain competitive in a tech-driven educational future.
