AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Cape Verde Stumbles, Guinea-Bissau Wins
The road to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicked off with high drama for Lusophone nations as Cape Verde stumbled in Mali, while Angola and Mozambique secured resilient draws against continental heavyweights. Guinea-Bissau emerged as the day’s big winner, securing a convincing victory on the road.
Cape Verde Struggles in Post-World Cup Debut
Fresh off a historic run to the 2026 World Cup Round of 16, where they pushed champions Argentina to the limit, Cape Verde faced a reality check in Bamako. Under new head coach Humberto Bettencourt, the Blue Sharks fell 3-1 to a disciplined Mali side led by Portuguese manager Tony da Silva.
The hosts wasted no time, with Ange Tia opening the scoring in the 5th minute. Cape Verde briefly leveled through former Benfica full-back Sidny Cabral in the 10th minute, but a brace from Nene Dorgeles (39’ and 51’) sealed the result. The defeat leaves Cape Verde at the bottom of Group K, while Mali and Rwanda take the early lead.
Angola and Mozambique Hold African Giants
In Group B, Angola earned a gritty 0-0 draw away to Egypt. Holding the record-holding seven-time champions to a stalemate in Cairo provides a vital confidence boost for the Palancas Negras as they look to navigate a group currently led by Malawi.
Meanwhile, Mozambique produced one of the day’s most impressive results, drawing 1-1 with Senegal in Group J. The “Lions of Teranga,” playing their first match under French legend Patrick Vieira, took the lead through Nicolas Jackson in the 32nd minute. However, Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo struck just before halftime to ensure the Mambas walked away with a point. The result is particularly stinging for a Senegal side still embroiled in a legal battle at the Court of Arbitration for Sport over the controversial 2025 AFCON final.
Guinea-Bissau Shines in Tanzania
Guinea-Bissau enjoyed the most successful outing of the Portuguese-speaking contingent, dispatching co-hosts Tanzania 2-0. Goals from Franculino Djú and captain Mama Baldé secured the three points, placing the Djurtus level at the top of Group L alongside Nigeria, who narrowly defeated Madagascar 2-1.
The Path to AFCON 2027
The qualification process will decide 21 of the 24 teams heading to the final tournament. The top two teams from nine of the twelve groups will advance, joined by the winners of the three groups featuring the host nations. The 36th edition of AFCON is set to be a landmark event, hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
