Fogo

The name of the 476 km² island means “fire” and it fits perfectly: the island is dominated by Cape Verde’s highest peak, the Pico do Fogo volcano, which rises 2829 meters above the sea. It is the only active volcano in the entire archipelago.

Volcanism is the island’s main attraction. The mountain can be climbed on a strenuous six-hour hike from the village of Chã das Caldeiras. However, it is only allowed with an accredited guide. For those who prefer a more comfortable hike, the Pico do Fogo Natural Park can also be easily reached by a good road from São Filipe, via Salto and Monte Largo. There are numerous hiking trails in this region.

Due to the high mountains, it rains from time to time, so Fogo has species-rich vegetation with many endemic plants, and the water also allows crops to be grown on elaborate terraces.
There are no large hotels on the island because there are no international flights to the island. As a result, there are local guesthouses and charming inns, but for the most part there is no tourism-oriented infrastructure.

To the west is the city of São Filipe, Cape Verde’s fourth largest city. It enchants with its magnificent town houses, small colorful houses and churches. The town is situated above the cliffs and the beach can be reached via stairs. However, it is only suitable for swimming to a certain extent. However, there are beaches nearby where you can swim, such as Porto de Vales de Cavaleiros beach.

In general, the island offers many beautiful and panoramic views. If you like nature, enjoy hiking and are fascinated by volcanoes, you’ll definitely feel at home in Fogo.
