October 29 History: Red Cross, Black Tuesday, and the Internet

October 29 stands as a pivotal date in global history, marked by the birth of humanitarian movements, the collapse of global markets, and the dawn of the digital age. From the founding of the Red Cross to the first-ever message sent over the internet, this day has repeatedly reshaped the modern world.

Foundations of the Modern World

In 1863, Henri Dunant’s vision became a reality with the founding of the Red Cross, establishing an international movement to protect the wounded and sick during wartime. Decades later, in 1888, the Suez Canal Convention was signed in Constantinople, ensuring the waterway remained open to all nations during peace and war. In 1923, the map of the Middle East changed forever as the Republic of Turkey was officially proclaimed.

Market Chaos and the Great Depression

Perhaps the most infamous event on this day occurred in 1929: “Black Tuesday.” The Wall Street Crash saw 16.3 million shares traded in a single session, with losses reaching a staggering $100 billion. The shockwaves effectively ended the “Roaring Twenties” and plunged the world into the Great Depression.

Technological and Scientific Milestones

In 1969, a revolutionary moment in communication occurred when researcher Leonard Kleinrock sent the first-ever email message. Attempting to send the word “LOGIN” from UCLA to a colleague, the system crashed after only two letters, making “LO” the first message sent over what would become the internet.

In 1998, 77-year-old John Glenn made history again, becoming the oldest person to fly in space when he launched aboard the shuttle Discovery, 36 years after his first orbital flight.

Political Turmoil and Human Rights

The 20th century saw significant legal and social battles on this day. In 1963, the trial of Nelson Mandela began in South Africa, a turning point in the struggle against apartheid. In 1936, a darker chapter began as Portuguese authorities opened the Tarrafal concentration camp in Cape Verde to house political prisoners.

In 2015, China announced a historic shift in social policy, officially abolishing its decades-old “one child per couple” policy to allow all families to have two children.

A Day of Remembrance

October 29 is also a day dedicated to global health and social awareness, observed as World Stroke Day, World Psoriasis Day, and the International Day for Care and Support.
