Cape Verde at IMF-World Bank Meetings: AI and Debt Focus
The Cape Verdean government is preparing for a pivotal week at the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, framing the summit as a crucial moment to navigate a global economy undergoing “significant changes.”
Set to take place in Bangkok, Thailand, from October 12 to 18, the meetings come at a time of heightened international volatility. In an official statement, the Cape Verdean government highlighted a series of pressing challenges that will dominate the agenda, including the disruptive effects of artificial intelligence on employment, rising public debt concerns, and fluctuating energy prices.
Focus on Artificial Intelligence and Human Capital
Maria José Lopes, Secretary of State for Finance, will lead the Cape Verdean delegation. The group’s mission focuses on securing international cooperation and exploring how small island nations can adapt to a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Key sessions on the delegation’s schedule include a high-level ministerial conclave on human capital. This session will specifically address how to mobilize private investment to upgrade workforce skills as AI begins to reshape global productivity. Additionally, the delegation will participate in a roundtable focused on accelerating policies to create “more and better jobs” in the post-pandemic era.
Strengthening International Partnerships
Beyond the plenary sessions, Cape Verde intends to leverage the gathering to strengthen specific diplomatic and financial ties. The agenda includes bilateral meetings with high-ranking officials from the IMF and the World Bank Group.
A notable highlight of the trip is a scheduled meeting with Mathias Jourdain de Alencastro, the Secretary of International Affairs at the Brazilian Ministry of Finance. This meeting is expected to bolster economic cooperation between the two Lusophone nations as they face shared challenges in debt management and market stability.
By participating in these high-level talks, Cape Verde aims to position itself as a proactive player in the global dialogue on sustainable growth and economic resilience.
