Cape Verdean Legend Blimundo at Porto Miniature Theater Festival
The spirit of Cape Verdean folklore is coming to Porto this September through the intimate art of “lambe-lambe” theater. The traditional tale “Blimundo” will headline the second edition of Miudezas – Mostra de Teatro Pequeno (Small Theater Showcase) on September 13.
This unique festival celebrates a specialized theatrical format where short stories are performed inside scenic boxes designed for just one or two spectators at a time. Lasting no more than five minutes, these immersive performances utilize puppets, shadows, lights, and music to create a private, magical world for the viewer.
A Legend of Courage
Produced by the Saaraci Coletivo Teatral, “Blimundo” is under the artistic direction of João Branco, a prominent figure in Cape Verdean theater. The production features the voice of Porto-based Cape Verdean actress Lisa Reis, with puppets created and manipulated by Janaina Alves and Laura Branco.
Set against the rugged mountains of Santo Antão island, the story follows a young man who dares to face the terrors that haunt his community. His journey serves as a poignant reminder that true courage is found not just in strength, but in intelligence, persistence, and self-belief.
International Artistic Exchange
The showcase highlights the cultural ties between Cape Verde, Brazil, and Portugal. Alongside “Blimundo,” the program features three other distinct works:
- “DENTRO” (INSIDE) by Cegonha Bando de Criação
- “T1+1” by the Portuguese group Coletivo À Buraco
- “Mãos de Sal” (Hands of Salt) produced by Teatro e Marionetas de Mandrágora
Event Details
The performances will take place at the Lavadouros das Fontainhas in Porto. The event runs from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM on September 13. Admission is free, offering the public a rare opportunity to experience the intricate and personal art of miniature theater.
