What is Blue Carbon?

Blue carbon refers to the carbon captured by the world’s ocean and coastal ecosystems. Seagrasses, mangroves, and salt marshes can sequester carbon at rates up to ten times higher than tropical forests. For a nation like Cape Verde, which faces significant challenges from climate change and limited terrestrial resources, blue carbon represents a sustainable pathway to economic growth.

Funding the Future: The Blue Carbon Credit Market

The primary objective of the Digital Reef initiative is to generate “Blue Carbon Credits.” These are tradable permits that represent one ton of carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere or prevented from being released. Corporations and nations looking to offset their carbon footprint can purchase these credits.
