Cape Verde Invites Timor-Leste PM for Strategic State Visit

In a move to bolster ties between two key members of the Lusophone world, Cape Verde has officially invited Timor-Leste’s Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão to visit the archipelago. The invitation, delivered during a high-level meeting in Dili on Tuesday, signals a new chapter in diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two nations.

A Strategic Framework for the Future

Cape Verdean Minister of Foreign Affairs Manuel Rosa extended the invitation on behalf of Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho. Speaking to reporters following his audience with Gusmão, Rosa emphasized that his mission was not just ceremonial, but aimed at building a robust partnership.

“We came with a mandate to invite Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão to officially visit Cape Verde,” Rosa said. “Our goal is to deepen and broaden our cooperation within a strategic framework looking toward the future. We leave here convinced that we can strengthen every possible avenue of partnership between our two countries.”

New Frontiers of Cooperation

The diplomatic mission comes as Dili prepares to host the 31st meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) this Wednesday. During his visit, Rosa outlined several key sectors where Cape Verde is ready to sign formal cooperation agreements, including:

  • Education and Vocational Training: Strengthening academic exchanges and professional development.
  • Hospitality and Tourism: Leveraging Cape Verde’s experience to bolster Timor-Leste’s growing tourism sector.
  • Digital Transition: Sharing expertise in modernized governance and technology.
  • Justice: Collaborative efforts in legal frameworks and judicial training.

“There is a vast field of opportunity; we just need the technical experts to sit down and map out what is possible between us,” Rosa added.

Beyond his meeting with the Prime Minister, the Cape Verdean diplomat also held productive talks with his Timorese counterpart, Bendito Freitas, and the President of East Timor, José Ramos-Horta. The series of meetings underscores a shared commitment to South-South cooperation within the Portuguese-speaking world.
