Two Foreigners Detained in Sal Island Drug Bust | Cape Verde News

Two foreign nationals are behind bars on Cape Verde’s Sal Island following a targeted anti-narcotics operation that uncovered a cache of drugs and cash. The suspects, citizens of Guinea-Conakry and Guinea-Bissau, were remanded in preventive detention by the local judiciary over the weekend.

Caught in the Act

The arrests were executed on Friday night in the city of Espargos by Cape Verde’s Judicial Police (PJ). According to authorities, the two men, aged 31 and 32, were caught “in the act of committing a crime” during an operation specifically designed to dismantle drug distribution networks in the tourist-heavy region.

Evidence Seized

Law enforcement officials reported that the suspects are “strongly suspected” of high-risk drug trafficking. During the search, officers seized several doses of hashish, a significant amount of cash, and other items linked to the illicit trade, including a knife.

Following their arrest, the two men were brought before a judge for their initial interrogation. The Sal Island District Court ruled that due to the severity of the charges and the risk involved, the suspects must remain in custody while the investigation continues. The operation marks another step in Cape Verde’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on international drug trafficking routes passing through the archipelago.
