World Cup 2026: Argentina, England, and Norway in QF Thrillers

Defending champions Argentina stand as the final barrier against total European dominance as the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals conclude today. The “Albiceleste” are the only non-European team left in the bracket, facing a resilient Switzerland side in Kansas City following a heavyweight showdown between England and Norway.

Kane vs. Haaland: A Battle of the Giants

The action kicks off in Miami Gardens as England continues its quest to end 70 years of hurt. Standing in their way is a historic Norway side making its first-ever appearance at this stage of the competition. The spotlight rests firmly on two of the world’s most clinical finishers: Harry Kane and Erling Haaland.

England arrives in the quarter-finals for the 11th time, having battled through bruising knockout rounds against the DR Congo and co-hosts Mexico. Harry Kane has been England’s heartbeat, netting six goals so far. However, he trails Norway’s Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot race. In an “unreal” debut World Cup, Haaland has smashed seven goals in just four matches, extending his international tally to a staggering 62 goals in 54 appearances.

While Haaland is the focal point, coach Stale Solbakken’s squad boasts creative depth, including Benfica’s Andreas Schjelderup and Fredrik Aursnes, who were instrumental in Norway’s stunning 2-1 upset of Brazil in the round of 16.

Argentina’s Survival Act

In the late kickoff, Argentina will look to maintain South American presence in the tournament. Despite being the holders, Lionel Scaloni’s men have flirted with disaster in the knockout rounds, narrowly escaping Cape Verde in extra time and staging a miraculous comeback against Egypt after trailing 2-0 until the 78th minute.

Lionel Messi remains the tournament’s talisman, having scored in every single match for a total of eight goals. History favors the Argentines: they have never lost a World Cup semi-final once reaching that stage. However, they must first dispatch a Swiss team that has proven incredibly difficult to break down.

Switzerland, yet to be defeated in this tournament, is looking to reach its first-ever semi-final. The two sides last met in a high-stakes World Cup knockout match in 2014, where a 118th-minute strike from Ángel Di María finally broke Swiss hearts.

The Road to the Final

The winners of today’s clashes will advance to a semi-final showdown in Atlanta this Wednesday. On the other side of the bracket, a titanic European clash is already set for Tuesday, as reigning runners-up France prepare to face a dominant Spain.

World Cup Quarter-Final Schedule:

  • England vs. Norway: 5:00 PM local (10:00 PM Lisbon)
  • Argentina vs. Switzerland: 8:00 PM local (2:00 AM Sunday Lisbon)
