World Cup 2026: Maxi Araújo Rescues Uruguay in 1-1 Draw
MIAMI GARDENS, United States — Sporting CP winger Maxi Araújo believes Uruguay left points on the table after a frustrating 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia in their 2026 World Cup Group H opener on Monday. Despite a dominant second-half performance, the South American giants were forced to settle for a point in a match where they struggled to clinical finish their chances.
A Gritty Debut in Miami
“The game was very balanced and all debuts are difficult, but we deserved a bit more,” Araújo said following the match at Hard Rock Stadium. The winger proved to be the savior for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, scoring the equalizing goal that prevented an opening-day disaster.
Uruguay found themselves trailing at halftime after Abdulelah Al-Amri stunned the Celeste with a goal in the 41st minute. Araújo admitted the team was wary of the threat posed by the Green Falcons. “We knew they played very well on the counter-attack,” he noted, acknowledging that Saudi Arabia’s quick transitions caused significant problems in the first half.
The Final Charge
The second half saw a relentless Uruguayan assault. Manuel Ugarte came agonizingly close to an equalizer in the 60th minute when his strike rattled the post, while star midfielder Federico Valverde saw his best efforts thwarted by an inspired Mohammed Al-Owais. The Saudi goalkeeper was the hero of the day, racking up nine saves to keep his side in the match.
Uruguay’s persistence finally paid off in the 80th minute. After Al-Owais produced yet another save from a Federico Viñas effort, Araújo was perfectly positioned to pounce on the rebound, slotting home his first-ever World Cup goal. While a milestone for the Sporting player, he confessed the moment arrived “a bit late” to secure a victory.
Deadlock in Group H
The stalemate leaves Group H completely level after the first round of matches. With Spain and Cape Verde playing out a 0-0 draw in the group’s other fixture, all four teams sit on one point, setting the stage for a high-stakes second round of play.
Uruguay will need to find their clinical edge quickly as they look to progress in a tournament where Bielsa’s high-intensity style is already being tested by resilient underdogs.
