Cape Verde Leaders Rally Behind Blue Sharks World Cup Debut
PRAIA, Cape Verde — As the “Blue Sharks” prepare to make their historic debut in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the nation’s top leaders have issued rallying cries to the team and its people, framing the moment as a turning point in the country’s history.
From ‘Improbable Nation’ to Global Stage
President José Maria Neves, speaking in the Cape Verdean language via a video message on Facebook, described the debut as a defining moment for the archipelago. Neves, who is traveling to Atlanta, Georgia, to watch the opening match in person, reflected on how far the nation has come since gaining independence.
“In 1975, this was considered an improbable nation,” President Neves said. “Fifty years later, Cape Verde is among the best in the entire world. By being at the World Cup today, we have already proven that we are a possible nation.”
The President emphasized that the team’s presence on football’s biggest stage represents the “strength and resilience” of the Cape Verdean people and their ability to reinvent themselves. He called on citizens across the islands and the global diaspora to unite behind the team as “one team.”
A Nation United
Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva mirrored the President’s sentiment, noting that the Blue Sharks’ qualification has sparked a level of national unity never seen before in social or political spheres.
“Participation is a high point for the Cape Verdean nation,” the Prime Minister stated. “Never have the colors of our flag been promoted as much as they are now. The curiosity and notoriety surrounding Cape Verde are growing worldwide.”
He extended his best wishes to the players, technical staff, and the football federation, noting the immense positive impact the tournament is already having on the country’s international reputation.
The Road Ahead: Group H
The Blue Sharks face a daunting but historic challenge today as they kick off their campaign against perennial powerhouse Spain in Atlanta. The debut marks the start of a rigorous Group H schedule that will see Cape Verde travel across the United States:
- June 15: vs. Spain (Atlanta)
- June 21: vs. Uruguay (Miami)
- June 26: vs. Saudi Arabia (Houston)
As the underdog story of the tournament, Cape Verde carries the dreams of a nation that, according to its leaders, is no longer just celebrating its past but actively imagining a “modern and prosperous” future.
