Portuguese President to Visit Cape Verde in July
Portuguese President António José Seguro has confirmed he will travel to Cape Verde this July for an official state visit. The announcement came via a message sent to the International Meeting on Atlantic Creoleness, currently being held in Praia.
While specific dates for the trip have yet to be finalized, President Seguro noted that the visit follows a formal invitation from Cape Verdean President José Maria Neves. Seguro expressed regret that he could not attend the current summit in person but stated he is “very interested in discussing the results” of the gathering during his upcoming stay in the archipelago.
A Diplomacy-Focused First Term
The July visit marks another step in Seguro’s busy international agenda since his inauguration on March 9. The President has hit the ground running, embarking on his first official trip to Spain in late April, followed by a high-profile visit to Italy in May. During his time in Florence and Rome, he addressed the 50th anniversary of the European University Institute and held talks with Italian President Sergio Mattarella.
Before heading to Cape Verde, the President is scheduled to visit Luxembourg on June 6 and 7. That trip will serve a dual purpose: an official state visit to the Grand Duchy and a celebration of Portugal Day with the local diaspora.
Strengthening Lusophone Ties
This upcoming mission carries significant symbolic weight for the relationship between the two nations. It will be the first visit by a Portuguese head of state to Cape Verde since July 2025, when former President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa attended the 50th-anniversary celebrations of the country’s independence.
As Seguro prepares for his arrival in Praia, the focus is expected to remain on deepening bilateral cooperation and exploring the shared cultural ties defined by the “Atlantic Creoleness” discussed at this week’s summit.
