Cape Verde: MpD Sets Leadership Vote After Election Loss
Cape Verde’s Movement for Democracy (MpD) has officially scheduled internal leadership elections for August 9, following a stinging defeat in the May 17 legislative elections. The announcement marks the beginning of a leadership transition as the party prepares to shift from the seat of government to the opposition benches.
Correia e Silva Steps Down
The party’s National Political Commission confirmed today that the current leader, Ulisses Correia e Silva, has formally reaffirmed his decision to resign. His departure comes after a decade in power, triggered by a legislative loss that ended two consecutive terms of MpD governance.
To ensure a smooth transition, the party leadership will appoint an interim president. This temporary leader will be tasked with organizing the August vote and overseeing the National Convention, which is slated for September 4 to 6. On the same day as the leadership vote, party members will also elect delegates for this convention.
A Shift to the Opposition
In a public statement, the MpD acknowledged the changing political landscape, emphasizing its commitment to the nation’s democratic process. “Political alternation is part of the democracy we helped build; therefore, the MpD will fulfill its role as an opposition party in parliament and in various other political and social spheres,” the commission stated.
Return of the PAICV
The political shake-up follows a decisive victory by the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV). Led by Francisco Carvalho, the PAICV successfully reclaimed power on May 17, ending ten years of MpD rule and setting the stage for a new legislative agenda in Cape Verde.
